Resting

前几天为托福考试做准备时,老公给我出了一道很有意思的题目,简单翻译成中文是“请提出你觉得有趣但一般人较少有同感的事/物,并进行叙述。” 以下是我所回应的文章。写作时间30分钟。

I love resting.

As I move on in life, from a child to an adult, from a single lady to someone’s wife, life goes on and it seems like works and chores are never coming to an end. Most people could hardly take a break from their job or what they are doing in life right now, because they are afraid of being leave behind.

Busy students, busy teachers. Busy kids, busy parents. How often do you spend time doing nothing and find yourself enjoying it?

I have noticed a trend of travelling in this new era. We work hard, we save up money and we decide to go for a tour so we can “take a break and recharge our souls”. It sounds amazing. But how many people actually use the getaway to actually rest? Busy visiting tourist spots, busy enjoying the best food recommended from various website, busy taking pictures to upload on social medias so the world will know how happy you are, busy checking phone every few minutes and chatting with friends every few hours… busy busy busy.

As part of human nature, we like to go for interesting, exciting things. Things that help to make us feel great, happy or fulfilled. Most of us likely feel bad for taking a rest. Why is this so? Is resting equals to lazy? Unproductive? Stop progressing?

Why can’t resting be a time of growing and moving instead?

In this constantly moving and changing world, we can easily feel overwhelmed by what’s going on around us. In the true resting time, I find myself connect to the inner me, the real world that’s patiently waiting for me to attend to. I can hear my voice, I can process my thoughts without being disturbed by what other people are saying or being judged by any other value system in the world.

I find it interesting to be in a position of rest. It could be doing nothing and staring at the wall, or simply allowing your imagination go further. It could be just living ordinary life: eating three meals a day, wake up in the morning and go to bed in night, read when it’s time to read, shower when it’s time to shower.

How many people can actually “achieve” resting by really resting your spirit, soul and body? Try to not fill your rest time with what you should do, but rest. Try not to have a “to do rest” during resting, but simply rest.

It is true that the world is moving faster and faster, and if we don’t pay enough attention we might not be able to catch up with the leaders of this generation. But I believe, life is so much greater than chasing dreams after dreams, owning possessions after possessions. Give yourself some space to rest, to hear from your heart, to be away from society and the worldly systems, you will find that time of resting isn’t a waste of time nor a boredom.

It’s rather beautiful, awesome and interesting.

xxxxxx
